Project-based learning designs for upper primary.

Structured weekly learning missions that connect reading, numeracy, investigation, design and reflection — and a final project the learner can explain.

The studio

An evolved kind of learning design.

We are a small South African education design studio. We build structured, project-based learning designs for Grade 4–7 — a credible core curriculum, deepened and rebuilt into weekly project missions a learner can actually carry out and explain.

What we make. Weekly learning designs that move a single real-world mission across every subject, ending in a project the learner produces and defends.

Why it matters. Structure is what turns activity into understanding. Our designs give upper-primary learners a clear path from noticing to building to explaining — the way modern learning is meant to work.

A studio, not a shop — designed by educators, for the people who run real learning.

Projects

Four grades. One designed progression.

Each grade is a Project. Inside a Project sit the weekly Labs — and a Tailor-Made route for schools and centres who want a custom design.

Grade 6 — The Evidence-Based Designer

Five weekly Labs, each a complete mission. Learners investigate, design from evidence, build, and explain the system they made.

    Eco-Base

Design a self-sufficient base that can survive in a harsh environment. Learners balance energy, water, food, waste, and design decisions — then explain the system they built.

Framework

What a lab looks like inside.

Every Lab is one connected weekly mission, delivered as complete project packs — designed so the adult always knows what to do and the learner always knows what to make.

  1. 01

    A weekly mission

One real-world brief that runs across the week and ties every subject to a single purpose.

  2. 02

    A daily rhythm

Each day moves the mission forward through a clear, repeatable sequence.

  3. 03

    Subject-linked tasks

Reading, numeracy, investigation and design — taught through the mission, not beside it.

  4. 04

    A project the learner produces

A model, plan, or prototype the learner builds, then explains in their own words.

  5. 05

    Reflection & simple rubrics

Clear prompts and rubrics that make progress and quality visible to learner and adult.

  6. 06

    Facilitator notes & levels

Guidance plus support / core / stretch levels, so one design fits a real range of learners.

The PPL Rhythm

01

Observe

Notice, read, question, and identify what matters.

  6. 6Reflect

The developmental pathway

Every grade runs the full cycle.

What changes from Grade 4 to Grade 7 is not the steps — it is the centre of gravity. The thinking grows heavier as the learner climbs.

  1. Grade 4

    The Careful Observer

“What is it, and what do I notice?”

  2. Grade 5

    The System Explorer

    “How does it work?”

  3. Grade 6

    The Evidence-Based Designer

“What solution can I design from evidence?”

  4. Grade 7

    The Strategic Presenter

“What decision can I defend, improve, and present?”

The PPL Engine

A designed capability system beneath every lab.

We took two established curriculums, combined them, and evolved them into a single system — kept rooted in a CAPS-style structure, so schools and parents recognise it and know exactly what it is. The result is 19 capabilities, organised into 5 clusters, placed deliberately across the year.
